Archaic and digital — the visuals for the 2024 La Notte della Taranta concertone, where folk tradition and contemporary imagery meet on stage.
La Notte della Taranta is one of the most attended musical and dance rituals in the world, and the defining event of Salentine popular culture. The 2024 concertone — the twenty-seventh, led by Maestro Concertatore Shablo — featured artists including Angelina Mango, Gaia and Geolier in front of an audience of over 150,000 people.
The theme of the edition, Generazione Taranta, reflected a generation that grew up alongside the festival, absorbing the sounds and rhythms of pizzica and reinterpreting them through contemporary aesthetics and visual languages. The same drive toward contamination shaped the visual project for the show, entrusted to studio Galattico — which had already led its artistic direction in 2022.
The visual work was built on extensive iconographic and stylistic research, developing a hybrid imagery in continuous dialogue between archaic and digital, between the memory of roots and contemporary contamination.
The source materials were heterogeneous — photographs, cutouts, graphics, illustrations — and the challenge was animating them in a way that reflected the spirit of traditional music, finding a visual rhythm capable of holding such diverse elements together without flattening their differences.
Within the team, the role was that of animator and motion designer, responsible for the movement and rhythmic construction of the illustrations.
For L'acqua te la funtana, Messapic vases and Salentine trozzelle were combined with graphic forms and motifs tied to the themes of water and propitiatory rituals.
For Angelina Mango's La noia, busts and sculptures from the Greek tradition were placed within an essential setting — geometric lines, flat color fields — where the contrast between classical and minimal became the visual language of the track.
For La pizzica di Taranto, iconographic elements drawn from distant and exotic cultures were animated rhythmically to the beat of the music, generating an unexpected visual contrast that amplified the hypnotic charge of the rhythm.
The result is a show that draws on the strength of Salentine cultural heritage to generate a contemporary visual language, dense with symbols and suggestion.
